As urbanization accelerates, cities like Chattogram face mounting environmental challenges, including rising temperatures, reduced green spaces, and declining air quality. Addressing these issues requires innovative and community-driven solutions. One such initiative is transforming unused rooftops into vibrant green spaces, contributing to urban sustainability while engaging local youth.
On July 7, 2025, Volunteer for Bangladesh (VBD) Chattogram District, in collaboration with Ek Takay Brikkhoropon, successfully implemented “Project Green Roof – Phase 10” at Eidgah Muslim Government Primary Girls’ School, Double Mooring, Chattogram. This initiative aligned with VBD’s commitment to climate action and sustainable development, supporting several SDGs including SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities & Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
40 youth volunteers actively participated in the plantation activities.
Rooftop plantation was carried out with carefully selected plants to enhance biodiversity and environmental resilience.
An interactive awareness session was conducted for students, focusing on climate change, sustainable lifestyles, and the benefits of rooftop greenery.
Collaborative engagement with school authorities to ensure long-term care of the plants.
This initiative not only improved the immediate environment but also inspired young students to adopt eco-friendly practices and advocate for sustainability within their communities.
The project envisions:
Enhanced air quality and urban microclimate.
Youth engagement in environmental stewardship.
A replicable model for urban green initiatives in schools and households.
Project Green Roof continues to serve as a signature VBD initiative, showcasing the power of youth-led climate action and community partnerships.
