Empowering Women Through Awareness: Breast Cancer Outreach in Tea Gardens

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Volunteer for Bangladesh (VBD) – Sylhet District, in collaboration with three compassionate female doctors from Jalalabad Ragib-Rabeya Medical College, launched a heartfelt outreach initiative to empower one of the most underserved communities in our region: the women tea garden workers of Sylhet.

Rather than hosting a conventional awareness session, our team took a different approach visiting each woman directly in her home within the tea gardens. Through one-on-one conversations, we created a safe space to speak openly about breast health breaking the silence, reducing fear, and encouraging proactive care.

What We Shared:

•Early signs and symptoms of breast cancer

•Preventive practices and self-examination techniques

•The importance of regular check-ups and medical follow-up

•Dispelling myths and stigma around breast cancer

This door-to-door approach helped build trust and allowed for personalized interactions, ensuring each woman not only received the information but felt heard and supported.

A Mission of Compassion and Commitment

Despite the logistical challenges long walks, uneven terrain, and the remote nature of the tea garden communities our team was driven by purpose and passion. This initiative was a labor of love, led by the belief that every woman has the right to health education and dignified care.

Impact Beyond Words

By the end of our visits, we witnessed something truly powerful: smiles of relief, eyes filled with gratitude, and a community that felt seen and cared for. It wasn’t just about awareness it was about empowerment, connection, and hope.

Because Awareness Saves Lives

At VBD Sylhet, we remain committed to promoting health, dignity, and empowerment for all especially for those who are often overlooked. This outreach is a small step toward a larger goal: a future where no woman suffers in silence.

Early detection saves lives. Let’s keep the conversation going
