My Road My Responsibility | Chattogram
Road accident in Bangladesh has already reached an epidemic level which we can see in the newspaper headlines reporting casualties regularly. Reckless driving, tendency to overtake, intention to avoid using foot over bridges and a complete disregard of traffic rules shown by pedestrians are the main reasons behind the frequent road accidents.
According to a recent survey conducted by the organization Nirapad Sarak Chai (NiSCha – We Demand Safe Roads), the number of road accidents in 2016 was 2,316, which grew to 3,349 in 2017 and then reached to 5514 in 2019 until September this year. The number of deaths caused by road accidents continues to grow. On average, 3,000 road accidents occur in Bangladesh each year, causing around 2,700 deaths, 2,400 injuries, and incurring an estimated loss of around Tk 40,000 crore annually, which is 2-3% of Bangladesh’s GDP, according to data collected by stakeholders.
