Environment Day Observation
Every year on the 5th of June, to promote global awareness of our planet and the importance of taking positive environmental action Volunteer for Bangladesh organizes campaigns throughout the country. Volunteers rallies for climate change awareness by pedaling their way around Bangladesh. Furthermore, volunteers add a touch of green to the landscape and plant saplings in respective districts with the theme “go green”. Major events related to environment observation by VBD are below:
Beautiful Sylhet: Beautiful Sylhet was a project initiated by the volunteers of VBD-Sylhet District which generated huge awareness amongst the local masses regarding the importance of keeping one’s surroundings clean. The volunteers cleaned the bank of the Surma River during this campaign on the 25th of January 2013. The program was covered by ATN Bangla and Bangladesh Television (BTV) as well as by a local newspaper called “Daily Uttar-Purba”.
Green Economy: With the 2012 World Environment Day’s motto ‘Green Economy’: Does it Include You?’ in mind, the volunteers of VBD hosted a two-part Campaign to encourage a greener and healthier Dhaka.
Riding Green 2012: On June 8 Volunteer for Bangladesh (VBD) successfully completed the second part of the World Environment Day’s – Riding Green two-day campaign. The volunteers participated in a cycle rally starting from Shangshad Bhaban at ManikMiah Avenue and ending at Gulshan Ladies club, where they were awarded certificates. Musa Ibrahim, first Bangladeshi to summit the Everest also joined the rally to encourage and support the participants.
Riding Green 2013: on 7th of June a cycle rally was arranged to promote the idea and the benefits of cycling. In Dhaka, the cyclists started from Manik Mia Avenue, crossed Bashundhara city via Panthapath as well as the Bangladesh Film Developing Corporation (FDC). They entered towards Hathirjheel and ended the rally at Gulshan Ladies Park. The rally also took place in on Sylhet and Chittagong on the very same day.
Bottle Miracles: In 2012, the volunteers of the VBD Dhaka District have collected thousands of plastic bottles and worked to construct the VBD office at Rayer Bazar, Dhaka, with plastic bottles. For these 3 months project, no labor was used for the construction work and it was done by the volunteers of Dhaka District.
Eco Leadership School Project 2016
The project has been started to establish an Eco-club in 30 schools of Dhaka City which ultimately aims to promote sustainable development goals and enhance their potentiality for the leadership. The original project design envisioned a three-month period for implementing the desired interventions. However, after completing the planned interventions an award and project ending program concluded that the project. Succeeded so far at the time in achieving its objectives effectively and delivered outcomes that were worthy of continuation.
The program idea was to establish “Eco Club” in 30 selected schools of Dhaka. The club consisted of 20 students from each school and a governing body to facilitate the club. Project aimed to promote sustainable development goals and enhance their potentiality for leadership development. Volunteers of Volunteer for Bangladesh took part in the formation of eco-club to supervise the students with tree plantation. Eco Club will be acted as a friendly club environment that will distribute waste management materials as well as take care of the school waste and the garden. In addition to this, each of the Eco Club asked to come up with a project on waste management for Inter Eco Club Competitions. Experts from different backgrounds identified the top 5 projects and awarded them through the award ceremony. The project envisioned a three-month period for implementing the desired interventions. However, after completing the planned interventions an award was arranged.
